LibreOffice and the club spreadsheet: make tournament data portable

The official LibreOffice release page currently lists 26.8.1 on its latest branch and 26.2.6 on its previous branch. Both belong to the free office suite’s maintained release lines. For a table tennis club, the practical relevance is familiar: entry lists, equipment inventories and volunteer rotas frequently start in a spreadsheet.

The LTTSF perspective

LTTSF’s view is that a spreadsheet can be a perfectly reasonable first tool if its structure is clear. Problems begin when colour, merged cells or an unexplained formula become the only record of an important rule. Software freedom should include the ability to understand the document itself.

What this could mean for your club

A useful club template would separate input rows from calculated standings, explain its formulas and offer an export with stable column names. Keep player identifiers distinct from display names, and document what a blank field means. These are our workflow suggestions, not tournament features announced in LibreOffice. The illustration shows an earlier Calc release, used to demonstrate the type of tool.
